Life Work Balance
Life work balance — three little words, and if you say them fast they sound easy. Why is it then that so many of us struggle with this very combination?
You can succeed at work but don’t have enough time or energy left for family, friends or leisure. You might have a commitment to a spiritual practice and spend time with your family but can’t earn enough to keep things going.
Life happens whether we decide to enjoy it or not and work is the name we’ve given to the things we do to continue living life. If we do make the decision to enjoy life then what will help this happen? The concept of balance is a part of this puzzle.
Watch someone riding a bicycle and you’ll see that they stay in balance by wobbling from side to side — there is no fixed place called ‘balance’. Watch great dancers and see how they relax into their bodies and move. They follow the rhythm and the beat; they never try to push it.
Like cycling and dancing, it is possible to learn balance and that learning takes commitment and openness. To experience new things you have to be willing to try-on new things, like when you’re shopping for clothes. You try things on and you only keep what you like.
There is an understanding in quantum mechanics that the mere act of observing an experiment (the observer effect) changes the outcome of the experiment. Simply having the courage to look at your life; to see what is working and what’s problematic is already a huge step.
